Hornby Photography Retreat 2012

Well with less than 48hrs until I head out for the 3rd Annual Hornby Photographers retreat… I realized I still haven’t blogged about last years retreat.. I really am behind on my blogging…. time to start catching up…

Back in 2011 a group of friends from a photography forum I belonged to at the time decided to get together and bring along other photographer friends for a west coast retreat. All of us lived fairly close, either on the Island, in Vancouver or based out of the Fraser Valley, but, we all went to stay for three days on Hornby near our friend and fellow photographer friend Jennifer Armstrong. It was a time of relaxation and connection, good food and of course – photography. I blogged about the group of ladies I went with Here, and then Day One, Day Two and Day Three. Then last year we all went back … this time we invited Rose of Simply Rose Photography to join us – and she did. She blogged about it right after – here is Part One and Part Two of her memories. I am adding them as I feel last year was a bit of a blur really for me. At the time I was preparing for an annual event I coordinate each year in April and editing pictures from a wedding – so I had even packed along my iMac and edited while I was there. Needless to say I did not get the full relaxation and enjoyment I had the year previously… it felt like my time there went by so fast. So… I am especially looking forward to this year – no iMac in tow. Sadly, only 4 of us from the original group are able to attend this year – and I will miss the ladies who cannot make it – but we do have an amazing bunch of photographers coming – some of whom who are coming to join us from Calgary and Williams Lake.

Here are a few images from my memories of Hornby Photographers Retreat 2012.

We visited a beautiful neighboring beach – just to explore on day one… I found my ocean front dream home…with a living roof.

We then went to see a local potter’s work … with a stunning outdoor display.

The next day we visited Helliwell Provincal Park for Rose to put a note in a bottle and throw it into the ocean – one of the 101 in 1001 challenges she plans on crossing off her list. You can read more about it Here on Roses blog, or Here on Emily’s blog post Liberty Tree Photography.

We later visited Middle Mountain Mead for a ‘Mead’ tasting – it was divine.

Can’t wait to see what we will do this year and what memories will be made.

Camp Squeah’s 50th Anniversary!

Spent many of my best childhood memories at Camp Squeah as a camper. Three summers on staff too. Much of who I am today would be directly related to the community of people who surrounded me in those foundational years. Our kids go there now – and their grandparents – just as mine had – make that gift possible. ‘Home away from Home’.

When I was asked to take some still life images of Squeah for a poetry/photo coffee table commemorative album – I was honored. Many of my images ended up in the book – which is a lovely reflection of Squeah. You can preview the book here.

On July 21st 2012 – we not only attended but volunteered as a family up at Squeah – reconnecting with friends and participating in “a day a Squeah”. Here are a few images I captured that weekend.

Celia had me over to meet her new sister Lily. She sure was happy to see me, first she showed me her baby… then her new sister.

Lily – kept quiet and peaceful – sleeping for a few pictures.

While I was taking pictures of Lily, Celia and Daddy were having a snack together on the couch.

Then when Celia was done, she came and joined in the fun.

Celia sure does love her new sister Lily.

Just as Mommy and Daddy do.

Welcome into the world Lily. Congratulations to you all.

Steven and Vinay’s Wedding Photobooth

I love to co shoot for Rose of Simply Rose Photography … I while back I had the privilege to do so at Nick and Shannon’s Wedding – a total blast – some of my images later made it into the uber popular wedding blog, Rock and Roll Bride with Roses work HERE. This time I had the privilege of co shooting at Steven and Vinay’s Wedding and setting up my own photobooth at the reception. It was an absolute privilege to be present that day, Steven is also my close friend Emily’s brother – it was great getting to know her/their extended family better and meeting their new in law’s that day. It was a eye opening experience for me to be present and capture these precious moments for these two men. It was the first same sex wedding I have not only been to, but hired to capture memories for. Steven, Vinay and the entire wedding party were some of the easiest most enjoyable people to follow and capture on a wedding day, to date. The love and support network they have in family and friends was inspiring. The venues, event details and decorating (WISH Events) were stunning. We started in Yale Town at The Round House, then moving through David Lam Park and the seawall, moving to Queen Elizabeth Park and the Celebration Pavilion for family formals and the Ceremony, arriving at the University Golf Club for the reception and the photobooth – tonnes of laughs – a few new personal photobooth fav’s for me below. Thank you for hiring me for your special day Steven and Vinay – an absolute privilege.

Sew’in Pressed

I jumped at the opportunity to capture the some images for Kandis in exchange for professional tailoring and alterations… who wouldn’t – I mean how many of us moms have that mending pile we never seem to get around to ‘mending’ – seriously, I had some items that were outgrown even by the second child. She also made the girls costumes for the Chilliwack Lion’s Festival of Music and Dance – they were fantastic (the out fits and the girls)

It was really fun – hanging out in the sewing studio … and capturing some images here in my studio of Kandis modeling some of her own custom designs. Here work is amazing – I know what I am asking for for my birthday!

A Year With Frog and Toad – CSOPA Mainstage 2012

This year our daughter Avianna had the privilege of performing in “A Year With Frog and Toad” presented by the Mainstage Musical Theatre Program of the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts. Which took place January 2012 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Here is a link to the press release from our local paper.

Avianna was a squirrel and won this years new “Rookie of the Year Award” – which was really quite an honor. It was a phenomenal experience not just for her – but for our whole family – to be involved, to volunteer and work along side of some truly talented individuals. Not just the amazing staff: Director Andrew Smith; Choreographer Shelley Wojcik; Musical Director Chris King; Stage Manager Steffi Munshaw; Set Design Kate Whyte; Costume Design Heather Westergard; Lighting Design Jamea Lister. But all the family and friends that came out and poured thousands of hours into making it a huge success. I have to admit – it was a big learning curve the whole way through. The students began rehearsals in September – I became the volunteer publicity coordinator for the show and started that job in October. Coby and I both, as well as the kids got involved in the stage craft side of things in December and stayed pretty close by the whole way through the process of staging, show time and set strike and clean up until near the end of January. It was an amazing first year! Thank you to everyone involved – for a fabulous first CSOPA experience for our family of a mainstage production!

I made up some collages for our kids for their journals for school of some the the images I took. I took many more – some of which can be seen on the “Mainstage” media section on the CSOPA website Here along side images taken by Andrew Smith.
